Americans Ruin Everything? A Guest Post

Below you’ll find a guest post from our friend, Ashley Hovde, who really wants to hear your opinions about the casting of the American version of The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo. So please, let a ridiculously good-looking sister know!

Thankfully Rooney Mara has the courage to bravely sport fake tattoos, a dyke-tastic hipster haircut, and an inauthentic attitude because there are no Lesbian actresses who could have played edgy, androgynous Lisbeth Salander in the English-language version of the film ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.’

Oh wait, I’m being sarcastic for the first time ever in my whole life! Honestly, I want to get pissed off about this, but I feel like I need to ruminate on the situation before I say anything too reactionary and poorly thought out.

I really am interested in hearing what other lesbians think about the decision to cast a straight actress for the role of Lisbeth Salander. So far I think it sucks, but I’m really trying to wrap my head around why the topic is bothering me so much.

Here are a few reasons, which I’d rather hear other people’s thoughts on before I assert my own:

1. She’s clearly NOT comfortable in the look they’ve painted her over with

2. Were there really no lesbians available or interested in the role?

3. Is this another case of ‘Iron Eyes Cody,’ the Italian man who is the most recognized/iconic ‘Native American’ in popular culture?

PS-The video is most easily found/famously known as “The Crying Indian.” Yes, yes it is. Gag.
