Jen’s Rant of the Week
I thought school expulsion was limited to some pretty bad apples, like the guy at my brother’s high school who punched a teacher in the face or the girl at my all-girls Catholic high school who just kept dying her hair pink despite the very strict dress code rules. What a sinner. But this week in “America Hates On the Gays,” a California court took expulsion to a whole new level. In 2005, two 16-year-old girls were expelled from a Lutheran school in Riverside, California after “conducting themselves in a manner consistent with being lesbians.”
Apparently the girls hugged a lot and had been “best friends,” which obviously buys them a one-way ticket to hell.
The girls were expelled after their Myspace pages—which listed them as “not sure” or “bisexual” in the sexual orientation field—were discovered by a teacher. The girls sued for discrimination, but these days we gays might as well have separate drinking fountains in some areas of the country—the discrimination allegations were overturned.
Kirk D. Hanson, who represented the girls, said the “very troubling” ruling would permit private schools to discriminate against anyone, as long as the schools used their religious beliefs as justification.
“It is almost like it could roll back 20 to 30 years of progress we have made in this area,” said the San Diego attorney. “Basically, this decision gives private schools the license to discriminate.”
Because pulling two teenagers out of their junior year of high school and making a spectacle of them for the sake of hanging on to your puritanical bullshit is surely the most Christian thing to do.
Vom.
